Bighorn River Fly Patterns are most easily defined as simple. Fishing the Bighorn with beadhead copper John’s and prince nymphs will likely not result in any success. The specific patterns they look for need to match the naturals in both size and color very closely. The most common pattern that is most unique to the Bighorn River is our sow bug. The Ray Charles fly is little more than a hook wrapped with ostrich herl. Most of our midge patterns are simple as well and our scuds are also a bit uncommon. There is definitely a certain number of bugs that even a well traveled angler may not have come across yet that you will need on the Bighorn.
